Woman, 21, dead after horror motorway crash with man arrested for 'dangerous driving'

A woman has been killed and a man arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a crash on the M62. The route remained closed nine hours after the smash between J5 for Roby to J6 for Tarbock Island, Merseyside. Police were called to the scene just after midnight after reports of a crash involving a grey Vauxhall Corsa and a silver Mercedes C180.

Merseyside Police said a man and woman were taken to hospital but the woman, who was a passenger in the car, died.

The man’s condition is not life-threatening, according to the force.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The M62 westbound carriageway was still closed on Saturday morning with drivers advised to find alternative routes.

A police spokesperson thanked motorists for their patience while officers dealt with the incident.

They added: “We are appealing for witnesses who may have captured the incident on their dash camera to please get in touch to assist the investigation.”

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson said: “Firstly, my thoughts and condolences are with the family of the woman who has sadly lost their life in this collision.

“We have now launched an investigation into her death and her family have been informed. They are being supported by our specially trained liaison officers.”

He added that detectives are in the early stages of gathering and examining evidence to provide the family with answers.

Det Sgt Timpson said: “Although an arrest has been made, our enquiries continue.

“The help of the public is paramount to assist in the investigation, and I would ask anyone who witnessed this collision or who has any information to please contact us.

“Alternatively, if you were driving in the vicinity of the M62 between junction 6 to 5 at the time of the crash, I ask that you please check your dashcam footage in case you have captured something which will assist in the investigation.

“Every piece of information or footage could be vital in establishing what happened.”

Anyone who saw what happened or has any information should call Merseyside Police’s Matrix Roads Policing Unit on 0151 777 5747.
