What actually happens at the Met Gala? Behind the doors of New York's most exclusive event

It is time to unfold the red carpet, as the biggest fashion event of the year is about to begin.

The Met Gala is a ball that takes place each year on the first Monday of May, and tonight celebrities will be dressed in their most glamorous outfits for this extravagant event.

Some of the most famous people in the world will gather at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Met Gala is not only a celebration of fashion but it is also a fundraising event hosted by Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of the fashion magazine Vogue.

Money raised at the ball is used for the museum’s Costume Institute which celebrates the history of fashion and hosts over 33,000 articles of clothing and artworks.

Tickets for the Met Gala are hard to come by as they are strictly invitation-only, and tickers can cost between $30,000 to $50,000, although it has been reported that fashion designers can buy an entire table at the event for $300,000.

Each year, the Met Gala has an overarching theme, and this year the event will be in tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, a fashion designer who was the creative designer for Chanel.

Mr. Lagerfeld is known for this incredible influence on fashion and his controversial opinions. Karl Lagerfeld has made a number of problematic remarks regarding the #MeToo movement and the Holocaust.

This has caused celebrities such as Jameela Jamil to condemn the “distinctly hateful” theme choice of the Met Gala this year, but the historic ball has always had its share of controversies.

The Met Gala received criticism in 2019 for its Roman Catholic theme when musician Rhianna wore a “blasphemous” papal mitre, which is a ceremonial headdress.

Other celebrities that have worn scandalous outfits include Madonna in 2016 when she wore an outfit that exposed both her breasts and buttocks, and US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2021 when she wore a dress with the phrase “tax the rich” sewn into the back in red satin.

Celebrities will begin the Met Gala celebration by walking up the famous Met steps and posing for the red carpet.

Once inside, it is not completely known what happens as mobile phones are expected to be turned off and no reporters are allowed in order to keep the event exclusive.

Vogue has said: “In short: It’s a secret. For this reason, guests must abide by the no phone (and therefore, no social media) policy.”

It is known that there is a cocktail hour, and recently musician Lizzo complained about the lack of drinking options at the ball and claimed only red and white is offered once inside.

There is also a formal dinner with assigned seating, and Vogue has said this “usually involves a high-profile performer” who will entertain the guests.
