Super Mario Bros Movie 2: The Nintendo sequels and spin-offs that could come next

The Super Mario Bros Movie received a green splat of 56 per cent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics giving the Nintendo-Illumination animation just 2 or even 1 star. Nevertheless, the fans have turned out in their droves as the film took a whopping $377 million globally in its first five days at the box office. As a result, the blockbuster has broken Frozen II’s record as the biggest opening for an animated movie ever. Given the latter went on to make $1.45 billion worldwide, no doubt Universal Pictures will be wanting sequels and spin-offs galore. And here’s what could well be in the works.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE.

The obvious follow-ups are The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 and 3. The first film ended with Bowser captured and shrunk down as a prisoner in Peach’s castle. But no doubt he’ll escape, presumably with the help of Bowser Jr and the Koopalings or maybe even Birdo the pink dinosaur, who was the villain of the Super Mario Bros 2 video game.

Other characters who could feature in a follow-up include the likes of Wario, Waluigi, Rosalina and Prince Daisy. And let’s not forget that the end credits scene for The Super Mario Bros Movie teased Yoshi hatching from an egg, so expect Mario to be riding him in the sequel.

On top of these, there’s Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong who could get his own movie with Diddy Kong. Meanwhile, Luigi voice actor Charlie Day has expressed interest in making a film adaptation of Luigi’s Mansion.

Super Mario has been around for 42 years, since his debut as Jump Man in the original Donkey Kong video game, so there’s a plethora of material to work with. Hopefully, there will be some news from Nintendo in the coming months and maybe even the rumoured announcement of a Legend of Zelda movie.

The Super Mario Bros Movie is out now in cinemas.
