Kate, Princess of Wales is known for her colourful style and has made blue her go-to colour for springtime events. Having sported both a bright pastel shade and navy ensemble on Easter weekend in the past two years, the most recent church service at St George’s Chapel saw Charles, Camilla and Prince William dressed in the very same colour palette. According to experts, the flattering blue tone has a long history when it comes to royal style.
The Royal Family followed tradition this Easter by attending the annual service at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, on Sunday, April 9.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla were joined by Princess Kate, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and even Prince Louis on the day.
While other members of the family including Mike and Zara Tindall, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice also attended, the tonal outfits worn by the senior royal’s made them stand out from their extended relatives.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, style expert and founder of Modes & More, Susie Nelson explained that the coordinated outfits worn by the King, Queen, and their immediate heirs was a strategic choice.

Susie said: “The royal family is fond of the colour blue, it is thought of as a regal and calming colour – useful in the run-up to the coronation.
“A number of the royals were also wearing blue at the Commonwealth Day service.”
And while each outfit was different, the attention to detail down to the youngest of the Cambridge’s children, Prince Louis, is a nod to the harmony between Charles, Prince William, and his young family.
Susie added: “Members of the royal family are often seen in the same colour at official events, for example, wearing burgundy at the Princess of Wales’ Christmas carol service in December, and green at Prince Philip’s memorial. It represents a symbol of unity.”
The young royal paired it with light blue tights and ballet-style shoes. Her brothers, just like their father and grandfather, opted for darker navy outfits.
Prince Louis wore bright blue shorts, a navy blazer, a blue shirt, and a dark tie. The second in line to the throne, Prince George, wore a more mature ensemble to match his father – in a navy blue suit.
King Charles was also seen wearing a navy suit, with a patterned tie and pastel shirt.
While the cohesive outfits depicted the family’s unified stance ahead of the coronation, royal historian Mok O’Keeffe noted that the colour choice is an age-old custom.
He told Express.co.uk: “Blue is a colour often associated with privilege and the aristocracy. The old saying “blue blood” would denote a member of a royal household.
“Our current Princess of Wales favours a palette of blues – when the occasion demands a level of formality, she will turn to this colour. The alternative may be black, however, the Royal Family wear black really only when in mourning.”
While other members of the family were also pictured in good spirits at the first Easter service since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, their outfit choices were careful not to overshadow the immediate heir’s.
Zara Tindall, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Beatrice all opted for various shades of pink instead, which Susie noted “contrasts well with blue”.
