According to The Sun, a close ally of the former Prime Minister said: “He could go nuclear and set up his own party. That would be wild, but he might.”
The Brexit architect poses a significant headache for current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has desperately sought to put the scandals of the Johnson-era behind him.
With Nadine Dorries also quitting Parliament last week, Mr Sunak is now likely to lose two by-elections, chipping away at his Conservative majority long before next year’s general election.
In the eyes of many, Mr Johnson leaves with the Tories’ popular mandate with him, alongside the support of many loyalists on the backbenches. If he were to head his own political party, the challenge to the Conservatives is likely to be a very serious one.
