“We met at, I think it was some Press Gazette awards wasn’t it, and you came in and you said, ‘Derek Draper?

“If I’d known your bar was set so low I’d have had a crack myself.’”

Laughing Piers confirmed: “Completely true!”

“And then Derek was there and you were like, ‘Hi Derek, hi,’” Kate added pretending to shake his hand.

“I’m going to come back, I’m afraid. I’m going to come back on Monday if you’ll have me. You two are going [off for the summer], I’m coming back,” the mother-of-two explained.

“I’m not sure I’ve got the fight to be Piers Morgan. I’ll be with Ben Shephard.”

She continued: “I couldn’t have done anything [before this]. I’ve literally been 24 hours a day researching everything, talking to people all around the world, trying to get the best care, which he has got. The NHS are extraordinary.

“The people working with him have been amazing. The hours and the days that they’re giving, not just to Derek, to everybody is unbelievable.

“It is their work, it’s not a miracle, although we do thank you a little bit God that he’s still here, but it is their brilliance.”

The 53-year-old shared: “I’ve got to get going, I’ve got to come back.

“I don’t want to make it sound like I’m Mother Teresa or anything, everyone’s having to do that, I’m not special or different, everyone’s having to get on with sadness and loss.

“If I come back we’ll all be in the same boat.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
