Outlander boss speaks out on scenes creator Diana Gabaldon ‘doesn’t always like’

The first Outlander novel by Diana Gabaldon was realised in 1991 and there have been seven books since with the ninth, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, set to be realised soon. As the author is busy writing the novels, she doesn’t have as much of an input on the show as fans might think. However executive producer Maril Davies explained she is consulted on major decisions about Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

Maril explained: “We email her all the time. She sees all the scripts. S

“he sees dailies, and anytime we do something crazy, or we want to kind of go off the reservation a little, we always consult her first.

“She doesn’t always like it. For the most part, though, we always try to please her.”

Maril added she understood what a task it was adapting Diana’s novels for TV as it has such a big fan base.

“I always knew what a loyal fanbase this had, because I was one of those fans,” she told Parade.

While Diana isn’t running the show, she did get the chance to write one episode for season five, the penultimate instalment Journeycake.

Speaking about how she ended up writing for the series, Diana told Town & Country: “It was more logistics than anything else.

“I was talking with [Outlander showrunner] Matt Roberts, and we were discussing whether I would like to write an episode for the season.

This moment led on to the second scene – the famous microscope incident, which saw Claire show Jamie his own sperm, or as he calls it “seed” under the lens.

Unfortunately, Diana explained the moment was cut down: “They trimmed off the last bit of dialogue, and people probably miss that, but they’ll enjoy the scene, regardless.”

The final scene from the episode the author loved was the moment Jamie told daughter Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) about her half-brother William.

“It’s a deeply, deeply emotional, but very low-key conversation that is so moving,” Diana commented.

“I thought they just nailed it. I’ve gone back and watched that particular scene a dozen times, at least.”

Fans will remember Brianna and her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and son Jemmy were preparing to go back to the 20th century when Jamie revealed she had a sibling.

However Brianna can never reveal she is William’s half-sister as it could lead to him losing his title as Earl of Ellesmere.

Jamie asked if she could look him up when she returned to the future to learn more about him.
