New 'holy grail' electric car technology could see EVs charge in just six minutes

A UK-based developer of ultra-fast-charging batteries, Nyobolt, has unveiled new details of its technology which could revolutionise the electric vehicle charging landscape.

The company is showcasing a vehicle that is able to charge fully and repeatedly in less than six minutes – a record in electrification.

Nyobolt claims the breakthrough will see vehicles fully charge in less than six minutes for a total range of up to 250km (155 miles).

This will lead to a more efficient electric car with lower up-front costs for the driver, as well as lower running costs and lower use of raw materials.

The Nyobolt EV weighs closer to one tonne with a 35kWh battery, with charging speeds equivalent to charging at over 1,600mph.

This is believed to be more than twice as quick as the fastest-charging cars available on the market today.

The majority of drivers are used to standing at a filling station for a minute or two while they pump petrol and diesel, something which is not yet available for electric cars.

While some newer cars can charge around 60 to 70 percent in roughly 20 minutes, all EVs will still require drivers to wait for longer periods of time to charge.

The main goal of Nyobolt is to resolve the core problems in the electric car industry that are hindering global uptake of EVs, like charging fears.

Sai Shivareddy, CEO at Nyobolt, said: “Unlocking the challenges faced by electric vehicle designers has been key to the development of our breakthrough fast-charging batteries.

“Previously, enabling a lightweight fast-charging vehicle was not possible without compromising its lifetime and so people have been relying on costly and large battery packs in the vehicle.

“With our unique technology we have achieved a six-minute charge car, and developed smaller battery packs that can deliver more power and charge in less time.”

The “ready-to-deploy” technology will go into production early next year and will unlock the so-called EV charging “holy grail”.

The interior of the car is also a sight to behold, with famed Lotus Elite designer Julian Thomson working alongside Nyobolt to ensure the car reflected its impressive technology.

Mr Thomson, as well as design and engineering business CALLUM, worked to create a vehicle which was wider, longer and lower to give it a larger, more impressive presence.

David Fairbairn, managing director at CALLUM, said he was offered a “unique and inspiring opportunity” in helping to design something to take the EV industry forward.

He added: “The collaborative creativity, engineering capabilities and steadfast efforts of Nyobolt, Julian Thomson and CALLUM have resulted in an EV that is not only exciting technically for the industry, but something that is beautiful to behold, too.
