My plans for new life with boyfriend have been put on hold by family deaths and I don’t know what to do

DEAR DEIDRE: MY boyfriend and I planned to move to his home town in Scotland.

I was excited about it but my grandparents and older sister all passed away this year and I don’t feel I can leave Mum.

She is 57 and was widowed five years ago. Now there’s just me her and my younger sister. I’m 29.

My boyfriend is 30 and has his own business now. It’s successful and he could run it from his home town but that’s a six-hour drive from here.

I was so looking forward to the new life we were going to build together but after my older sister died too, of cancer, I feel obliged to stay. What should I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: All this loss is heartbreaking for your mum but surely the last thing she would want is for you to pass up on exciting plans for your future with your boyfriend.

How does making you unhappy help her feel happier?

Tell your mum how much you love her and make plans for her to visit you in Scotland as soon as practicable.

Meanwhile, this horrible pandemic has taught us the benefits of Zoom and Facetime.
