Marital bliss! Climate change inadvertently slashing thousands of weddings

With greenhouse gas emissions making the UK’s climate warmer and more temperate, many couples are opting for marquees over traditional venues, according to firm Casablanca Hire (https://www.casablancahire.com/).

It said it has seen a steady increase in recent years, especially since the pandemic with bookings rising 30 percent since 2020.

The warming climate has come as the cost of a traditional wedding has spiralled upwards, with the average ceremony now costing £18,400, according to a 2022 study by Hitched.co.uk.

The single biggest factor in many weddings is the cost of a venue, something which can be “vastly reduce” and even halved by hiring a marquee, according to Mark Mangla, from Casablanca Hire.

He said: “More recently we have seen an increased interest in the wedding market. We’re constantly getting calls from couples asking about pricing and availability.”

“It makes sense because in almost all cases it’s vastly cheaper than renting a traditional venue – especially if you’re only having a small reception.”

“Warmer weather also encourages couples to consider an outside option of a marquee at home or in local grounds.”

“There seems to have been a bit of a snowball effect with people going to weddings in marquees and then thinking about doing it themselves.”

“A lot of people say that cost is a big factor in their decision – especially as the price of conventional venues continues to rise and we all have to contend with the cost of living crisis.”

“It’s true that you can never depend on the great British weather – but the longer, hotter and drier spells seem to have turned people’s heads.”

Mr Mangla explained that if a couple have around 80 guests at their wedding they can hire a marquee for around £2,500

This is significantly less than the average traditional venue cost of £8,400, according to Hitched.co.uk.
And in reality many couples end up spending in excess of £10,000 when other factors such as drinks and food are brought in.
“Renting a marquee allows couples to outsource or even do all of this themselves”, Mr Mangla added, “which again helps reduces costs”.

“We set up and dismantle the marquee wherever they want and the rest is up to them.”

“There are no tie-ins with catering and drinks so they have carte blanche to do it exactly how they want.”

“Some might have a buffet or get their friends behind the bar – it’s very much DIY which I think a lot of people like – a modern, earthy, sustainable approach.”

“Furthermore, hosting an event in one’s own garden is a personal and special touch, which is appreciated by family guests.”

“They’ve got complete control and if they are savvy they can end up saving themselves a fortune.”

“It’s no surprise that more people are doing it.”
