He continued: “Using secateurs, carefully remove old flowerheads, which have been protecting tender buds from frost over winter, just above a pair of buds, being careful not to cut off any of the flower buds, creating a pleasing shape.”
New wood
Panicle hydrangeas and hydrangea arborescens bloom on new wood and can be pruned in winter or early spring.
However, Mark said these plants need a “harder prune” for the best-looking flowers.
He said: “For hydrangeas that flower on new growth, a harder prune can be done without sacrificing this year’s blooms.
