Where kitchens of the past placed function over form, today’s kitchens are very much the focal point of the modern home.
They represent much more than a place for preparing food. These days, kitchens are used as much for entertaining, living and relaxing as they are for cooking.
It is also the room a potential property buyer will make a beeline for and that often has the greatest influence on the value of a home.
Melissa Klink, Creative Director at Harvey Jones, shared how painting kitchen surfaces, whether they be the walls or cabinets, are key to creating a kitchen that stands out.
She said: “Colour is a great way to make your kitchen stand out. Bold monochromatic schemes are a current favourite of mine.

“I love playing with three or four different shades of the same colour in the kitchen.
“Repainting cabinets is an instant way to swap over the style of your room if you need a refresh.
“Also, don’t forget that any surface can be experimented with! Don’t pigeonhole yourself to only painting the walls. There is so much potential for creativity in the kitchen.”
It’s not just kitchen cabinets and walls that can be painted, also shelves, islands and worktops can be painted too.
If you want to introduce colour into your kitchen but want to keep the space as neutral as possible, give the insides of cupboards a splash of colour.
For those who have a neutral colour scheme for their kitchen, adding a bold blue, pastel pink or graceful green inside cupboards will help bring personality into the space.
This would also look very effective for kitchens with display cupboards as a pop of colour would peep behind the display, drawing the eye immediately to whatever is being stored.
However, in order to paint these areas, households need to know how to choose a colour scheme for their kitchen. Melissa said: “Choosing colours for your space is one of the biggest decisions to make for your home. It’s important that you tap into your personal sense of style when you consider colour and not just browse home interest magazines and social media for inspiration.
“Look in your own closet, at personal objects around your home and artwork that you are drawn towards to help understand what your natural colour palette is.”
Beyond simply choosing colours that you love, the designer claimed that Britons “must always” consider the light within their space.
She said: “Natural sunlight influences everything, especially colour. A lack of sunlight will keep colours in their richest nature so you can accentuate this with hardware and work surfaces that add some reflection and bounce the light around the room.”
Picking the right colour can feel like a really stressful decision but it is also one of the “easiest elements to change”, so try not to feel too overwhelmed during the decision process.
