King Charles is less popular now than he was as Prince of Wales, damning new poll finds

King Charles received a massive hit to his popularity on the eve of his Coronation as a new poll has revealed that he is less liked than when he was the Prince of Wales. The new Ipsos poll also revealed that the Prince and Princess of Wales are the most liked members of the Royal Family.

Only one fifth of the poll respondents said King Charles was the royal they liked the most.

However, it isn’t all bad news for the new King.

Nearly half, 49 percent, of respondents said that they think King Charles is doing a good job as King.

While this is a decline from the initial surge of support he received after succeeding Queen Elizabeth II, it is consistent with his previous ratings as Prince of Wales, particularly during the Platinum Jubilee era.

Meanwhile, around one-third, 32 percent, of the participants had a neutral opinion of his reign, reflecting a slight increase of 7 percent in March 2023.

Only a small percentage of respondents, 9 percent, believed that King Charles was doing a poor job, a drop of 5 percent from the previous rating.

This marks the lowest negative rating recorded thus far.

Kelly Beaver MBE, Chief Executive of Ipsos UK and Ireland, said: “With less than two weeks until the Coronation, King Charles may be happy to know that half of Britons think he is already doing a good job, numbers recent Prime Ministers would envy.

“It’s a good start for Britain’s new King and something he will no doubt want to continue to work on once the Coronation Quiches are eaten and the bunting is down.”

According to a different survey, almost 57 percent of the respondents expressed their satisfaction with King Charles’ performance as monarch.

This marks a decline of 8 percent from the previous survey conducted in May 2022, where the public was asked to rate his performance as Prince of Wales ahead of the Platinum Jubilee.

Additionally, the participants were asked to name their favourite two or three members of the Royal Family from a list.

The most frequently mentioned member was the Princess of Wales, with 38 percent of mentions, followed by Prince William, the Prince of Wales (34 percent), any of the King’s grandchildren (27 percent), and the Princess Royal, Princess Anne (25 percent).

King Charles rated around average and received 20 percent of mentions.

The members of the Royal Family who received less favourable responses included Prince Harry (14 percent), Meghan Markle (10 percent), Prince Edward (11 percent), the Queen Consort (10 percent), and Prince Andrew.

Additionally, 18 percent of the participants indicated that they did not have a favourite member of the Royal Family.
