Kanye West’s private school accused of locking kids indoors and only feeding them sushi

Kanye West’s private school has been accused of locking pupils indoors and only feeding them sushi, according to a lawsuit. The Christian school, which takes students from pre-kindergarten to the twelfth grade, is facing a lawsuit over several alleged health and safety violations. It is the latest blow for the star rapper – who has been at the centre of controversy over the past year.

A wrongful termination lawsuit has been brought against Donda Academy by two former teachers.

Cecilia Hailey and her daughter Chekarey Byers claim they were fired after complaining about potential dangers to students.

The pair also allege the school created a fire hazard by locking its doors to keep pupils indoors all day.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Thursday, also claimed that medication was stored haphazardly, that there was no school nurse on site, and janitorial services were forbidden because “West did not believe in cleaning products containing chemicals”.

Ron Zambrando, a lawyer working on behalf of the teachers, said in a statement: “Kanye West is clearly as bad at running a school as he is at managing his own personal and professional life, enabling an unsafe and illegal school environment for students.

“Kanye needs to realise his genius is in creating music, not in school administration.”

Donda Academy, named after Kanye’s late mother, is a non-accredited school which costs $15,000 (£12,916) per year to attend.

Pupils are reportedly instructed to sit on the floor to eat sushi for lunch everyday as there are no tables or chairs.

The lawsuit was brought against Donda Academy after Hailey and Byers, who are both African-American, complained to the principal that the school had “unlawful educational practices”.

During the meeting, the pair cited lack of discipline that had allegedly led to “severe bullying…that had gone without” punishment.

They also expressed concerns about the school’s cleanliness.

The lawsuit alleged that the principal called Byers and Hailey “aggressive,” and “facilitate[d] stereotypes about African-American women as being confrontational simply for doing their job”.

The pair were fired and reportedly given no reason for the termination on March 3.

The lawsuit, which names Donda Academy, the award-winning rapper and directors of the school, has requested “general damages not limited to emotional distress” but has not specified a monetary amount.

Express.co.uk has approached West’s representatives and Donda Academy for comment.
