Horror lightning strike sets home ablaze as couple wake up to 'massive bang'

An Essex couple were woken by a “massive bang” after their bungalow was struck by lightning in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters were called to the address on York Avenue, Corringham, shortly before 4am today (Sunday, June 18) after the strike caused the roof to catch fire.

The roof and bedrooms were badly damaged in the fire, however the couple, six dogs and a cat got out safely.

Watch Manager Geoff Wheal, of Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: “The couple were woken by a massive bang and then heard neighbours knocking on their door.

“Thanks to the neighbours, the couple along with their six dogs and cat got out safely.

“Crews worked incredibly hard to extinguish the fire. Although the roof and first floor bedrooms were badly damaged, they managed to stop the fire from spreading to the ground floor and save the property.”

More thunderstorms are expected across many areas of the UK over the coming days.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in force across England and Wales from 12pm on Sunday until 11.59pm.

The warning states:  “A few outbreaks of thundery rain are possible overnight and during the morning, but the main likelihood of heavy showers and thunderstorms is during the afternoon and evening, with longer spells of thundery rain in places.

“Some places may miss most (or all) of the rain, but others could see 30 mm in an hour or less, and perhaps a few spots seeing 60 to 80 mm within 3 to 6 hours.

“There is also the potential for frequent lightning, strong winds and hail. While uncertainties remain regarding the extent and focus, it is perhaps areas from London northwards across the Midlands, eastern England, east Wales and southern areas of northern England, that currently seem most likely to see disruption”
