Harry and William's rift could only have been healed by one person, says royal expert

Prince William and Prince Harry’s rift could only be sorted by “one person” – according to a royal expert. Brothers William and Harry noticeably avoided eachother at their father’s Coronation in May following a long running rift stemming from Harry’s move to the US in 2020. Since then, the rift has worsened following the release of Harry & Meghan on Netflix and Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare.

Speaking to OK!, one royal expert claimed the late Princess Diana would be the “only one” who could sort her son’s rift.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: “I’m sure her greatest wish would be to hug her boys again and find some way of resolving the rift between them. If anyone could sort things out, it would have been Diana.

“Diana was an absolutely devoted mother and her sons meant the world to her. When I met her at Kensington Palace and sat in her drawing room, we were always surrounded by pictures of William and Harry, and she was so clearly proud of both of them.

“She told me the country was lucky to have William, and I think she was right. She would have been particularly proud of his initiative to solve the problem of homelessness… especially given that it was she who first showed him the plight of people reduced to living rough.”

Princess Diana, who died in 1997, would have celebrated her 62nd birthday today.

William and Harry further showed their rift after recording separate video messages for the winners of the Diana Awards on Friday.

The Prince of Wales appeared first – shortly before his younger brother – to praise the “courage” of the young people honoured by the Awards.

The Duke of Sussex then made his own appearance 20 minutes later.

Praising the young people, William highlighted their “compassion and relentless dedication”, while Harry spoke on something a little different.

Harry focused on the importance of joining forces with other campaigners because “no one is a conduit for change alone”.

Discussing Harry, Ms Bond said: “She told me that she sometimes worried about whether Harry would find his place in the world, being the second born without a defined role. But she said, in general, both boys were fine.

“In fact, she said that everything seemed to bounce off Harry. And perhaps that would have remained true, if she had not died so suddenly.”

Speaking about how Diana’s own difficult childhood shaped her approach to raising her sons, Ms Bond revealed what the Princess had told her. “‘I talk to them constantly about everything,’ she told me.

“‘I always want to make sure that they ask any questions they want. I shower the boys with love and cuddles. I never had any as a child so I love to give it to them.’

“She laughed as she told me that William was then at an age when he said ‘Oh! Mum stop it. But they love it, really’ she giggled.”
