Gyms reopen: When will gyms reopen? Boris Johnson confirms opening

In the Government’s document entitled Our Plan to Rebuild, released on Monday, May 11, gyms and fitness studios were originally part of step three of the lockdown exit plan, due to start on Saturday, July 4.

Mr Johnson said: “The business and culture secretaries will establish task forces with public health experts and the sectors to help them become Covid-secure and reopen as soon as possible.”

The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson had also said that gyms would not be opening soon “because of the level of activity that goes on, the number of surfaces that are touched, there’s a far greater risk of infection than one where people are stationary and breathing less hard and touching fewer surfaces”.

The industry reacted with fury and frustration at the Government’s seemingly “catastrophic decision” to give the green light to a number of sectors while excluding gyms.
