Social distancing proved difficult for some after a few drinks as the temptation to mingle and make new friends was too strong.

Pals were seen chatting in the street and queuing to enter sitting-only nightclubs.

One excited reveller even picked up a road cone during his night out.

Students are returning to university for the new term in strange circumstances, with gatherings limited to six in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The new clampdown measures were introduced across England to lower the number of people meeting in groups indoors and out.

Under the former rules, no more than 30 people can meet inside with up to one other household, but this has been slashed to just six.

The new rules also stipulate that the six people can be from different households, in an attempt to bring rules in line with outdoor gatherings.
