Five decor mistakes to avoid that make kitchens ‘look smaller, more confined and gloomy’

Searches for small kitchen inspiration and risen significantly in the past month so it’s no surprise that users are turning to social media for inspiration on how to maximise their kitchen space.

For small kitchen spaces, maximising functionality and efficiency are key to making the space appear bigger.

Tom Revill, co-founder and interior design expert at online home decor brand, Plank Hardware, has shared mistakes to avoid when it comes to maximising small kitchen space and what to do instead

Kitchen decor to avoid

1. Overcrowding countertops

Tom said that households should “avoid cluttering countertops” with unnecessary appliances or decorative items.

He claimed that by simply clearing the countertops households will create more workspace and “give the illusion of a larger kitchen”.

2. Neglecting proper lighting

Poor lighting can make “a small kitchen feel smaller, more confined and gloomy”, according to the designer.

Households should ensure they have sufficient lighting, including lighting for food preparation areas such as over the hob, to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

3. Neglect vertical spaces

In small kitchens, it is particularly important to take advantage of vertical space to create additional storage space and organisation solutions.

Install hooks or rails on walls for hanging pots, pans and utensils, or use magnetic strips for knife storage.

4. Prioritising aesthetics over functionality

Whilst most want to create a lovely-looking, welcoming space, it’s important households “don’t prioritise aesthetics over functionality” in a small kitchen.

Instead, Tom suggested considering the flow and ease of use when planning the layout, and choosing practical solutions that make daily tasks more efficient.

5. Forgetting about negative space

Negative space in interior design is the empty space between two pieces of furniture, or between furniture and a wall, or around accessories.

The interior pro urged: “Avoid filling every corner with appliances or accessories, as negative space can create visual balance and make the kitchen appear more spacious.”

Kitchen decor to implement instead

1. Add storage such as hooks and rails to free up countertop space

Install extra shelves or storage units to keep countertops clear and create a more spacious kitchen. Tom said: “Hooks on walls or cabinet doors provide a convenient way to hang pots, pans and utensils, freeing up space and keeping frequently used items within reach.” Even rails on mounted walls or underneath cabinets with hooks can hold various kitchen items.

2. Remove upper wall cabinets and install open shelving

A popular trend for homeowners is to remove upper wall cabinets altogether, opting for just floor runs. This way it reduces bulk and allows for more light to pass through the space. The expert commented: “Open shelves can create a sense of openness and visually expand the space.”

3. Use light colours

Light-coloured walls, cabinets and countertops can create an “illusion of a larger space”. Households can brighten up their kitchen with ample lighting to make it appear more inviting.

4. Use mirrors

According to Tom, mirrors can “visually enlarge a small kitchen” space by reflecting light and adding the illusion of depth. Consider adding a mirror backsplash or hanging a mirror on the wall.
