A FAMILY mourned the wrong body at a cremation after a mix-up between funeral directors and a hospital.

Grieving relatives watched the man’s coffin slip behind the curtain unaware their relation was still in the morgue.

Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey twigged the error a day later.

It is thought the gaffe occurred because the man, a Covid-19 victim, was in a body bag.

A source said: “The funeral directors had to call the man’s family, the hospital approached the other family.”

Co-op Funeralcare said it was the hospital’s responsibility to identify and release the correct body.

James Taylor, from Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are deeply sorry for the distress this has caused for the families involved.

“We have offered them our sincere and unreserved apology and we will continue to support them.

“This incident is being investigated thoroughly to ensure lessons are learnt.

“Mistakes of this nature are extremely rare, but when they occur it is essential that we do all we can to make sure they do not happen again.”
