Climbing out of the shower or bath and wrapping around in a fluffy towel is ideal, especially when it is cold outside. However, keeping towels soft can be hard, especially when washing them on a regular basis. They can lose their softness over time due to the residues from detergent and body oils which build up in the fabric.
Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Cheryl Curristin wrote: “Just tried the white vinegar extra rinse after washing my towels.
“I was very skeptical, thinking it would stink of vinegar, but it’s the best way to make towels fluffy. Two lovely clean and fluffy towels drying on the line.”
As well as being used to clean items around the home, white vinegar is great when it comes to laundry.
White vinegar not only strips residue left behind from any fabric softener, it can also work great to soften the towels.

What’s more, it can help to brighten whites as well as help bright colours to stick.
Cheryl explained how she left the fabric conditioner out “deliberately”. She added: “It’s so much better, so soft and fluffy, I can’t believe it.
“Definitely will do this every time for my towels now. I cannot believe I’ve only just tried this at the age of 64.”
To do this white vinegar trick, the cleaning enthusiast recommended washing the towels as normal with a detergent pod.
When the cycle is over, add some white vinegar into the fabric softener drawer and set them off for another rinse.
Jill Adams commented: “Totally agree. Always use white vinegar in my machine instead of conditioner.
“It works great and keeps the machine sparking clean at the same time, definitely no smell after either which is a bonus.”

This way of cleaning can also work when cleaning other clothes as well as bedding to keep them nice and fresh.
It is recommended that an extra white vinegar rinse is done at least every six weeks to soften towels.
Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, also recommended using white vinegar to clean towels, as well as baking soda, avoiding using too much detergent.
He told Express.co.uk: “Both common household ingredients can be used separately as ways to transform rough towels to soft ones.
“Simply add 250ml of white vinegar to the washing machine drum alongside the liquid detergent you normally use, and dry as normal.
“The vinegar gets rid of detergent build up, making the towels as fluffy as the day you bought them.
“You can also use bicarbonate of soda to make your towels soft and fluffy.
“Mix eight tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with your laundry detergent before putting it in the washing machine to help loosen up the towel fibres and get rid of any dirt, keeping your towels as good as new.”
Britons should also make sure they keep their clothes and towels separate when washing as it can transfer a lot of bacteria between each item in the washing cycle and prevent towels from staying nice and fluffy.
