Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance expert at Domestic & General, said: “The lifespan of washing machines really does depend on the quality of your machine. However, they can work effectively for up to as much as 20 years if cared for properly.”
1. You use too much laundry detergent
Sometimes clothes can get particularly dirty which makes people think they need more laundry detergent, but this can be an issue.
Ian explained: “When you use too much detergent, it can be difficult for the washing machine to effectively drain the excess. This then results in clothing and bedding that feels sticky or slimy – which is not what you want.
“Not only this, but excessive amounts of detergent could also damage your washing machine due to the build up and leftover residue.”
Over time, this can prevent the water from flowing as usual and may even result in a leak which would need a repair.”

2. You put too much in your washing machine
While it is always recommended to fill up the machine, it is important to strike a balance between being energy-efficient and potentially damaging the appliance.
As a general guide, the appliance expert advised aiming to fill the machine to 80 percent full. He said: “Your washing machine requires the right amount of water to wash effectively.
“If you stuff the machine too much, you may find clothes are coming out less clean and still with visible marks intact. Not only can this be frustrating, but also comes at a price.”
Overloading the drum puts the machine under a lot of strain and weight which could damage the machine if it is more than the appliance is designed for.
3. Your appliance is placed wonkily
The position of your machine may not be considered too much, but ensuring it is level is crucial, and one of the “most important” steps, according to the expert.
This may seem obvious, but an uneven appliance can shift around too much during the spin cycle and could potentially lead to damage or dents.
To avoid this, check all of the feet are touching the ground and adjust the front-levelling legs to the right height.
4. You ignore the lint filter
The appliance pro continued: “Whilst lint may not seem like a potential threat to the maintenance of your washing machine, over time the build up could begin to cause problems.
“Washing machines have a lint filter to help gather and trap these fibres, but if not removed on a regular basis, this can clog the machine and leave your clothes full of lint.”
5. You don’t clean the machine regularly
Despite the washing machine cleaning clothes, it also needs to be cleaned regularly in order to keep it in tip top condition.
The best way to do this is to run an empty cycle, adding a small amount of white vinegar to remove any stubborn residue and bacteria.
